“I just find horse trekking so special. And it gives me a lot of quality time because I am out on my own in nature with my dog, on the back of my horse.”

Freedom on horseback: horse trekking in the Mühlviertler Alm

There's something meditative about horse trekking in the Mühlviertel Alm: mystical forests, murmuring streams, gentle hills and no sound but the beat of the horse's hooves set the scene.
The Mühlviertler Alm area north of the Danube is an exceptional corner of Upper Austria. It looks remote and unchanged compared to some better known regions, busy with visitors. The peace and quiet which envelops you in the beautiful scenery give the Mühlviertler Alm a contemplative character, especially as you explore it on horseback. More than 435 miles of bridleways wind their way through the region. Wherever the trail takes you, there are 50 riding centers and inns nearby that are devoted to equestrians and their faithful companions.

The extent to which they are geared to riders is shown by the range of equestrian services: paddocks for a midday break, stalls to house the horses, and saunas in which two-legged guests can relieve aches and pains. In short, the Mühlviertler Alm has everything you need for the perfect riding vacation. As you ride along shady forest trails and through sunlit meadows, take a spontaneous break at an old ruin. Afterwards, ride through a cooling stream to wake yourself up and see how good life can be on the back of a horse.
