Visitors exploring the East Tyrolean side of the Hohe Tauern National Park are sure to end up in the town of Matrei. The area is peppered with small inns in the mountains and valleys, providing a rich variety of landscapes and cuisines.
"What we have today” is the title for the food and drink menu. How about an alcohol-free alpine meadow tonic or a yarrow-Campari to get started? From the terrace guests have an excellent view of the lush herb garden, while the friendly staff serve up hearty pancake soup and aromatic herb soup. Naturally, one can also order East Tyrol’s ‘Schlipfkrapfen’ dumplings, for a tasty, filling meal after a long hike, or perhaps cheese dumplings with leek ragout or nettle dumplings with gorgonzola sauce. Another delicious treat is the roast liver with caramelized apples and potatoes, or a herb goulash, both made with home-bred cattle. The roast venison combination with medallions and shank are sourced from local hunting grounds and served with red cabbage and ‘spätzle’ dumplings. For a cool treat guests can try the herb and blossom parfait with creamy elderberry blossom sorbet. To top things off, there’s blueberry crepes or Strumerhof cake. Along with a small but fine selection of wines, one can chose from various different kinds of digestifs, such as the East Tyrolean Pregler brandy or schnapps with alpine lady’s mantel or larch shoots.
