St. Martins Therme & Lodge

In the Burgenland’s Seewinkel region, where the last hills of the mighty Alps melt gently into the steppe-like plains of Pannonia, one finds the St. Martins Spa & Lodge – an oasis for wellness fans and wildlife friends alike.

Researchers scoured the region for years and found what they were looking for in an abandoned gravel pit. In the sunny, wind-swept plain between the villages of Frauenkirchen and Apetlon: at a depth of 940 yards, they hit curative thermal water. They were followed by architects and landscapers, who carefully restored the area’s natural habitat and constructed the spa and adjoining lodge, with natural, gently flowing lines. The top priority in constructing the spa was to ensure that it merges into the surroundings gracefully and unobtrusively. Gazing through the massive glass windows and from the elevated wooden terrace, guests can enjoy the sight of the neighboring steppe landscape dotted with lakes, which has been declared a part of our world heritage by UNESCO, and bask in simple peace and quiet.

With a soul thus replenished, guests can spend the rest of the day in the spa, relaxing in the five different saunas and steam bathes, enjoying the different whirlpools, swimming pools and children’s areas and quiet zones. Guests with less aquatic interests can join a tour with the St. Martins Rangers to discover the area’s unique flora and fauna. The program includes bird-watching walks, ferry rides, nighttime hikes and tours to see free-range water buffalo, grey cattle, European white donkeys and some of the last truly wild horses on the planet. And since there is much, much more to do and see, guests should plan to stay a couple of days or a long weekend, taking one of the 150 rooms available at the exclusive St. Martins Lodge. Highlights of this 4-star establishment include a spa and treatment areas exclusively for hotel guests, a top-rate gourmet restaurant, an explorer library, the open fireplace in the evening and the Nature Observatory with a panoramic view of the Burgenland’s vast expanses.
