Tour the Vienna State Opera

As one of the world’s foremost opera houses, the Vienna State Opera is an exceptional institution artistically as well as in terms of architecture. A performance at the Vienna State Opera is a truly memorable experience, but you can also see live performances on screen in front of the Opera, or discover its secrets on a guided tour of the historic site.

On May 25, 1869, the Vienna State Opera opened with Mozart's DON GIOVANNI in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. It was the first building to be commissioned by the emperor for the huge city-planning project that gave us today’s magnificent Ringstrassen Boulevard. While the Viennese were originally not very happy with the design, today the State Opera is considered one of the finest examples of Neoclassicist architecture. Take a guided tour of the building to discover more of its history and gain a deeper understanding of one of music history’s most important periods. Marvel at architectural details of the impressive marble staircase and other highlights including the beautiful auditorium, which, once a year, is converted into the venue for the famous Viennese Opera Ball.

Closely linked to the Vienna Philharmonic (it recruits its members from the opera’s orchestra) the Vienna State Opera is an opera house as well as an opera company. Being one of the busiest opera houses in the world, you’ll find it often stages a different opera each day of the week. In April, May, June and September, around 150 opera and ballet performances will be screened live on the Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz in front of the opera building on a 50 m² screen: classical enjoyment for free!

As of October 2013, a new feature allows opera fans from all over the world to enjoy a selection of outstanding performances from the Vienna State Opera in their own living room. Using state-of-the-art technology, pictures and sound of the highest quality will be transmitted via live stream. For only a small fee, viewers can switch between an overall view of the stage and a live-edited version of the opera or ballet performance. The live streams start 30 minutes before the performance with background illustrations, information about the Vienna State Opera, synopses of the streamed works, and more.
