Fascinating juxtapositions in the programming and a trans-genre orientation have characterized the Gmunden Festival ever since its founding in 1987. From July to August, classical and contemporary music, dance, lied recitals, plays, readings, performance art, films, exhibitions, and discussions are offered in the city of Gmunden, in the Salzkammergut, and in the region surrounding the Traunsee.
The famous Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard
, who lived intermittently in Gmunden during his lifetime as well as owning and lovingly restoring several farms in the region, and who often wrote in glowing terms of the Upper Austrian landscape in his works, has been a focal point of the festival since 1999. In addition, as a “festival within the festival”, a different great Austrian writer is honoured each year with a series of events. Featured writers thus far have included Peter Handke, Christoph Ransmayr, Friederike Mayröcker, and Ernst Jandl. www.festwochen-gmunden.at
