Riedel Glas

All are of one opinion, from Time magazine to wine pope Robert M. Parker: without the glasses of Tirol’s glassmaker, wine wouldn’t taste half as good.

When Johann Christoph Riedel was born in the Bohemian city of Neuschloss in 1673, no one had the vaguest notion that it marked the birth of one of the greatest glassmaking companies the world had ever seen.

It is being run today from Tirol by the family’s 11th generation. In the 1950s, the current CEO Claus Riedel began to experiment with wines. He was the very first in the history of glassmaking to merge shape, size and rim diameter of a glass to precisely suit the characteristics of a given wine.

The effect of the glasses he created is simply unbelievable. Or, as Robert M. Parker expresses it: “I cannot emphasize enough what a difference it makes.” Long stemmed, smooth, unadorned and blown very thin, that’s how Riedel manufactures its glasses. And ever since then, wine drinking has become an unsurpassed enjoyment the world over.
