Explore the saltmines in Hallein, Salzburg
Adventurous? Don’t miss a tour of the Salzwelten Salzburg which takes you far underground into one of the oldest mines in the world. The Celts started this mine 7000 years ago! Don coveralls, then ride on a small miniature train into the mine and the adventure begins! After stepping off the train, you have to go deeper underground to where the salt was mined.
This is the fun part! There are long polished wooden slides taking you ever deeper into the mine. Four persons sit behind one-another and slide into the depths just like the miners used to. There are mining exhibits along the way and one of the highlights is the boat ride on the underground lake, a spectacular sight with colored lights dramatically lighting the scene. Watch for the border sign showing you are entering Germany and another when leaving back to Austria! Back outside, there is a recreation of a Celtic village next to the entrance. Great fun!
