A stone circle, illuminated from within, in the entry area and a glass façade with alabaster stones symbolize the powers of nature, at once fascinating and menacing. These powers were experienced first-hand by the village and ski area of Galtür in 1999, when the community lost human lives, houses, and hope in the avalanche disaster. How the region has succeeded in coming to terms with this traumatic event is nothing less than remarkable. The 345-metre-long and up to 19-metre-high avalanche barrier not only incorporates art and culture; it is also impressive for its modern interior design and an exterior that merges seamlessly with the natural surroundings of the scenically beautiful area. Other references to the mountains are the use of the Alpine warning colours of yellow and black, the blue stones - symbolizing glacial ice - in the bar of the "Frozen Waters" café, and a boulder wall. The show "LIFE IN THE MOUNTAINS - The Fascination of Snow - The Legend of the Avalanche" depicts mountains as a challenge to humans, but also as a rich source of myths, fables and tranquillity.
