The Markterwirt is a place where many people think it’s probably been here forever...yet still has continued to evolve.
Traditional cuisine is served at the Markterwirt in Pongau, Salzburg
In the shadows of the church tower, so to speak, stands the oldest house on Market Square in Altenmarkt, the Markterwirt. This privileged site on the old road over the Hohe Tauern mountain range has always drawn visitors and stopovers, including such prominent guests as Emperor Franz Joseph the First and Sir Edmund Hilary, first conqueror of Mount Everest. But un-prominent guests as well have learned to savour a few hours in the intimate dining rooms over a plate of roasts, gnocchi, wild
game from the patron’s own hunting grounds or
fish from Lake Zauchensee. Apropos: fly fishing adherents are also welcome guests; they ply their trade in the waters of the restaurant’s own trout waters.
