Electronic music is the most important thing on earth. This, in any case, is the point of departure for Graz springfestival, Austria’s largest festival for new electronic music, which is held each year over one long weekend in June.
Graz combines the charm of a Central European city with the pulsating lifestyle of a young metropolis. In addition to presenting a series of other young avant-garde festivals,
the Styrian capital is also home to the springfestival. The festival is much like the city: it unites open-mindedness with intimacy; it is cosmopolitan while remaining receptive to the city’s own vibrant scene. Top electronic-music acts from around the world, superstar DJs, visual artists, and pioneers of the club culture
meet up-and-coming local talents, budding young DJs, and heroes of the underground. With this mix and the diverse programme representing a cross-section of all genres, the springfestival pulls off the balancing act between mainstream and avant-garde – and transforms all the important locations of the city into one big party zone
. The 2011 festival kicks off with the Electronic Beats Opening Concert in the Kasematten, on Graz’s Schlossberg. The former storage cellar and prison
has long established itself as one of the city’s premier locations for open-air events. Other venues include the futuristic Mur Island, the Orpheum, the smart CarpeDiem Lounge and various smaller clubs. Every evening the Electronic Beat Club sets up camp in the Dom im Berg, an underground performance space
carved into the Schlossberg mountain. www.springfestival.at
