A pilgrimage site for winter-sports enthusiasts, the Bergisel has seen two Olympic Winter Games and is the venue of countless international competitions attracting spectators from all over the world. Its new ski jump installation, designed by star architect Zaha Hadid in 2001, is a triumph of style and structure. The sinuous and dynamic form of the main tower accommodates a restaurant, viewing terrace and the ski jump starting ramp and offers a breathtaking view of Innsbruck.
Athletic visitors can climb the 455 steps to the main tower, but it can be reached more comfortably in just a few minutes by funicular which takes you up the tower to the café and restaurant and the panoramic viewing platform, which offers a 360 degree view of the Tirol’s mountain scenery. The installation is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Tirol, open daily from 9.00 am to 5:00 pm.

For nearly a century, a funicular system offered passage around the hills of Innsbruck. In 2007 the system was retired, and replaced with something so architecturally stunning that it became a tourist destination in its own right. The journey is what matters on the Hungerburgbahn, and it happens in futuristic style.
