365 Days of Leopold Museum
A must-visit in Vienna for art lovers
Located in the MuseumsQuartier Vienna – one of the world's largest and most frequently visited art and cultural spots – the Leopold Museum is a key cultural centre of the city.
A treasure trove of Austrian art, it showcases an exceptional collection of more than 8,300 works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, inviting you to explore the beauty and complexity of the era's artistic innovations, from expressive portraits to groundbreaking avant-garde works. The Leopold Museum is well-known for housing the world’s most significant collection of works by Egon Schiele, alongside masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and other key figures of Austrian Modernism.
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Leopold Museum showcases a comprehensive retrospective of French realist Gustave Courbet, the collection of the Austrian National Bank (both a first in Austria!), a joint exhibition of works by Austrian painter Herbert Boeckl and sculptures by Swiss sculptor Hans Josephsohn, as well as a photography collection of the 1920s and 1930s in Germany and Austria.
The building's design by architects Laurids Ortner and Manfred Ortner is equally striking: a bright cube clad in white shell limestone from the Danube river, spanning over five floors, with a dragonfly-shaped lookout on the roof. Leopold Museum's bright, modern galleries provide an elegant setting to explore the radical ideas, expressive forms, and emotional intensity that defined Vienna’s art scene around 1900.

Gustave Gourbet: 19 February - 21 June 2026
Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) is considered the most eminent exponent of Realism, who boldly defied the idealising conventions of 19th-century art. Besides his artistic talent, he also became known for his political involvement following the demise of the French Empire in 1870. In his portraits, landscapes and still lives, he showed a quiet, contemplative world which appears in contrast to the rapid political and industrial changes of his time. With his focus on artistic autonomy and provocation and his revolutionary style, Courbet shaped entire generations of artists and continues to do so.
Gustave Courbet: Realist and Rebel is the first solo exhibition dedicated to Courbet in Austria, featuring works from all periods of the artist’s work. It features around 130 exhibits, among them some 90 paintings, 20 graphic works and a large number of archival material.
