Austria's most beautiful Christmas markets
Festive atmosphere during Advent and winter magic in towns, castles and villages

From mid-November until the end of the year, Austria is the place to find romantic Christmas markets. Glistening lights and seasonal treats make for a magical experience.

In Austria, you can immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Christmas markets, which can be found in cities and rural areas alike. The cities sparkle with lights, while the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds wafts through festively decorated streets. At a Christmas market set against the magnificent backdrop of Schönbrunn or Grafenegg Palace, you will find fine handicrafts, regional delicacies and a dose of festive magic.

In rural areas, you can enjoy authentic specialities at atmospheric Advent markets and feel the warmth of the people. These Christmas markets are more than just a place to stroll – they create space for encounters and special moments. Browse through handmade gifts, discover traditional decorations and let yourself be enchanted by the sound of music or the soft crunch of snow. Away from the hustle and bustle, in small villages, you can feel the original magic of Advent, nestled in the winter landscape.

Festive Winter Wonderlands

Our Tips for Christmas Markets in Austria’s Cities

A festival of Christmas fantasy awaits at the Christkindlmarkt on Vienna’s Rathausplatz. Countless stalls offering handicrafts and culinary delights, a tree full of hearts in front of the illuminated town hall, and a children’s programme attract countless visitors each year. When not strolling around or enjoying the Viennese conviviality at the punch stands, visitors can glide around the ice rink or follow a path lined with handcrafted nativity scenes in awe.

Equally elegant is the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt at Dom and Residenzplatz. The traditional huts in the heart of the baroque old town give the festive setting a unique atmosphere.

No less romantic is the Christkindlmarkt in Innsbruck’s old town. Accompanied by the sounds of the tower brass players from the Golden Roof and the spicy scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts wafting through the medieval streets, a particularly cosy Christmas mood settles here.

At the Advent market on Graz’s Schlossberg, high above the city’s rooftops, you’ll find atmospheric lighting, regional specialities, and panoramic views that make the wait for the Christ Child truly unforgettable.

Our Tips for Christmas Markets in Austria’s Regions

Nothing beats getting into the Christmas spirit in Austria's snow-covered rural landscapes. One of the most charming Advent markets is in St. Wolfgang, where you can experience regional traditions and authentic handicrafts, with the floating red Advent candle on Lake Wolfgang in view.

A particularly down-to-earth Christmas Market takes place each year in the Johannesbach Gorge near Würflach in Lower Austria. In front of the wild and romantic ravine stands Austria’s tallest decorated Christmas tree, reaching over 20 metres high. At more than 40 stalls, visitors warm themselves by open fires and admire the craftsmanship of glassblowers, woodturners, and blacksmiths.

Even more rustic is the Salzburg Mountain Advent in the Grossarl Valley. By torchlight and candlelight, a wide variety of nativity scenes can be admired here, all created over months of meticulous handcrafting by the local nativity scene association.

Along the illuminated winter trail between snow-covered huts, regional specialities, music, and atmospheric readings await visitors at the Katschberg Advent Trail.

The scent of gingerbread and beeswax fills the streets around the basilica in Mariazell. Here, pilgrimage tradition and festive ambience come together to create an unforgettable Christmas market experience.

A real insider’s tip is the Rattenberg Advent: in this medieval town, candles, torches, and open fires replace electric light, creating an especially contemplative and tranquil atmosphere.

Imperial Glow of Lights

Our Tips for Christmas Markets at Austria’s Castles

Where emperors and princes once resided, some wondrous beings can be seen during the Christmas season. One such sight is the Christmas Angel at Hellbrunn Palace, which towers eight metres above the palace pond. The Hellbrunn Advent Magic in Salzburg truly lives up to its name – with a fairy-tale forest of 700 fir trees, adorned with 10,000 red baubles and fairy lights.

The Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna exudes the finest imperial flair. In front of the festive illumination of the imperial palace, everything the Christmas heart desires is offered, from traditional handicrafts like wood carvings to nostalgic toys and charming decorative items.

And at Belvedere Palace – also in Vienna – a whole Christmas village awaits in the baroque setting, full of creative gift ideas and culinary discoveries. For many Viennese, it is the most romantic of all Advent markets.

In the atmospherically lit castle grounds, the Advent market at Grafenegg offers exquisite handicrafts, regional specialities, and a programme full of music and readings – a Christmas market with a truly distinctive ambience.

Christmas Markets in the provinces

FAQs

Most Christmas markets in Austria begin in mid-November, though the exact dates vary depending on the region, city, or province.

Large Christkindlmarkets in major cities such as Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, or Innsbruck are open daily until shortly before Christmas, often until 24 December, with some Advent markets remaining open until New Year’s Eve or even 6 January.

Smaller Christmas markets in rural areas tend to have shorter running times, often only on weekends.

For all current dates and opening hours, please check directly with the respective organisers.

Austria's Christmas markets are as diverse as the country itself – from the magnificent Christkindlmarkt set against imperial backdrops to the quaint Advent markets in mountain villages.

Here is our selection of the most beautiful:

  • Vienna: Christmas markets at Rathausplatz, in front of Schönbrunn Palace, and the atmospheric Christkindlmarkt in the Spittelberg district

  • Salzburg: Domplatz, Mirabellplatz, and the fairytale-like Hellbrunner Adventzauber

  • Innsbruck: Old Town market under the Golden Roof and the Panorama Advent Market on the Hungerburg

  • St. Wolfgang: Romantic Advent market by the lake with a floating Advent candle

  • Graz: Christmas market on the Schlossberg with panoramic city views

  • Katschberg: Advent trail amidst snowy nature

  • Mariazell: Traditional Advent market “Advent wie damals” around the basilica

  • Rattenberg: Reflective Advent market in the medieval old town

Yes, absolutely – many Christmas markets in Austria are genuine family experiences. Numerous Christkindlmarkets and Advent markets offer dedicated children's programmes, creative craft workshops, and story readings in which little ones can actively participate. Whether pony rides, ice rinks, or carousels – especially at the larger markets, a wide range of attractions ensures a visit that the whole family will remember.
