Four absolute must sees at Nordkette mountain
The Nordkette is part of Austria’s largest nature park, the Karwendel Nature Park, and can be reached directly from Innsbruck city centre in just a few minutes! The breathtaking 360° view leaves a lasting impression, Innsbruck on one side and Tyrol’s most extensive conservation area on the other.
1. Hungerburg funicular’s stations and cable car
The Hungerburg funicular’s stations, designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, have become an integral part of Innsbruck’s cityscape and represent the most modern architecture in the alpine region. The funicular enables visitors to reach the Hungerburg in just 8 minutes. There are several stops along the way including the Alpine zoo.
2. Alpine Zoo
What could be nicer on a quiet, sunny day than a trip to the zoo with the family, your partner or even on your own? The Alpine Zoo is on the sunny side of the Inn Valley, directly at the foot of the Nordkette and above the rooftops of Innsbruck. The zoo is the only one of its kind worldwide.
Europe’s highest-lying zoo (750m) is also easy to get to. It is not far from the city centre – a short walk will take you directly there. However, if you are not in the mood for walking, you can take the bus or the modern Hungerburg Funicular. The funicular has its own station very close to the zoo entrance and is very popular among families.
3. Seegrube Restaurant
The Seegrube Restaurant is the highest chill-out zone in Innsbruck, located 1,900m above sea level at the Nordkettenbahn's Seegrube station, meaning the alpine restaurant is reachable without walking in just 20 minutes from the city centre (Congress).
The restaurant is open all year round and caters to all who enjoy Tyrolean cuisine and the fantastic views over Innsbruck. The cosy area is a nice place to while away the hours on those sunny days. Enjoy classic Tyrolean cuisine, served at the table.
4. Hafelekar and cable car
Walk up to the highest point of the Nordkette and experience summit atmosphere without a long ascent. Walking time from the Hafelekar station: Approx. 10 – 15 minutes.
The impressive experience at Top of Innsbruck, the highest viewing point, is the 2,300m-high Hafelekar, is within every man’s grasp thanks to a direct connection from the city. Visitors may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the normally shy wildlife, but the unique panorama of city and mountain is the real highlight.
