“There is an incredible number of birds that nest here year round, more than 170 different sorts.”

Birdwatching at Lake Neusiedl

The lake's fascinating grassland scenery attracts many visitors. Not just birdwatchers are drawn to its wide expanses, secret reed belts, and salt ponds.
Your gaze roams across the lake to the distant horizon, where it meets the sky and clouds. The Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park's exotic appearance is a little reminiscent of the African plains, especially since you can watch wild animals close up here in eastern Austria. More than 300 different species of bird nest and breed in the reed belt, more than anywhere else on the European mainland. They are all native - from the proud eagle to the tiny chiffchaff - and the region's experienced rangers show great respect for the wildlife, helping visitors to get as close as possible without disturbing it. The Seewinkel has been a well-kept secret amongst birdwatchers since the 1960s and today's hosts and tour providers know how to skilfully bring out a passion for birdwatching in visitors who have never done it before. The impressive area on the east shore of lake Neusiedl is also an experience in its own right, without binoculars. The countryside, which extends from the reed beds, via the salt ponds, to the Hanság fens in Hungary, opens your eyes, sometimes to things that you thought long since forgotten.
