The Imperial Villa - Upper Austria

"Oh, how long I long for the dear, dear Ischl," wrote the 15-year-old Crown Prince Franz Joseph in 1845 to his mother and confessed to a affection that should remain unbroken until his death.
A visit to the Imperial Villa in Bad Ischl in Upper Austria - the wedding gift of the Archduchess Sophie to the young bridal couple Franz Joseph and Elisabeth - lets us guess why the neo-classical building was so much more appealing to the Emperor than the splendor of his Viennese residences. As a retreat of the imperial family during the summer months, far from the rigid protocol of the Hofburg or Schönbrunn Palace, the imperial villa was also a place of great decisions: Here Emperor Franz Joseph received high statesmen and signed in 1914 the declaration of war against Serbia.

The unchanged rooms still breathe the spirit of bygone times - it almost seems as if Emperor Franz Joseph had left his study just a moment ago to devote himself to his favorite pastime, hunting. And as if Empress Elisabeth had interrupted her daily fitness program just for a walk in the magnificent park.

Even today, on the occasion of Franz Joseph's birthday on 18 August, every year in Bad Ischl, the "Kaiserfest" is celebrated with all ceremonial and great joy.
