The Summer Destination You’ve Been Looking For

In Zillertal in Tirol, every day of your summer holiday will be different. There will be action-packed days, filled with activities like rafting, canyoning and paragliding. There will be days when you’ll try something you’ve never done before, like skiing on a glacier in the middle of summer.

And there will be days when you’ll walk through nature, marvelling at the majestic peaks and lush Alpine meadows, just taking it all in. You might be hiking one of the many and varied trails, enjoy a refreshing drink and a chat with a local in a mountain hut, or take your bike past a curious herd of cows. One thing’s for sure: Zillertal in Tirol is a place that stays with you.

Two Brits in Zillertal in Tirol: The Perfect Selfie

This summer, we decided to send Brits Estelle and Russell to Zillertal in Tirol and give them a bit of a challenge: Come back with the perfect selfie! Along the way, they experienced pristine nature, fabulous sporting activities, and a view they’ll never forget:

Now Make It Yours!

Feel like visiting Zillertal now, too? Check below for Estelle and Russell’s itinerary – then make it yours by picking, choosing and adding alternatives!

Wildgerlostal Trail & Durlassboden Reservoir (00:06)

Estelle and Russell took their mountain bikes to the Wildgerlostal trail, a varied, circular route that includes the scenic ride along the Durlassboden Reservoir in Gerlos.

Or Alternatively…

If you’re looking for a different kind of route, enjoy a panoramic tour to the cosy Höllenstein hut and visit the in-house mountain farmers’ museum. Surrounded by impressive peaks, you can then go on to the traditional Grieralm hut.

Go on an overnight bike-and-hike adventure: Take your bicycle from Durlassboden Reservoir to Finkau inn, then leave it there while you take the 5-hour hike to Zittauer hut at over 2,300 meters. You’ll pass picturesque waterfalls and see some of the over 80 glaciers in Zillertal up close. Stay overnight at the hut and enjoy home-made bread and traditional Austrian cuisine.

Uderns Golf Course (00:34)

Next, Estelle and Russell tried their hand at a game of golf in the midst of impressive Alpine peaks. Austria’s first 5-star superior golf course in Uderns offers 18 holes in a spectacular natural setting.

Or Alternatively…

Want to get your adrenaline pumping? At Schlegeis Dam, you can take your pick: Fancy a spectacular Flying Fox zipline ride or giving the abseiling station a try? Or would you like to climb the dam itself on a specially designed via ferrata? Even the little ones can do some climbing at a designated facility.

You can also visit the Olpererhütte and enjoy the amazing view over the Schlegeis reservoir.

Ahorn Leisure Trail (00:50)

The themed Ahorn Leisure Trail took Estelle and Russell around the Ahorn Plateau, a place to experience nature anew. They then climbed the Filzenköpfl peak where they were rewarded with stunning views.

Or Alternatively…

The Huberwinkelalm hut near Hochfügen might be the area’s best-kept secret: Delicious regional food, a beautiful setting, and landlady Babsi make it truly special.

Or try one of the many activities on offer across Zillertal in Tirol: Cool down in an outdoor swimming pool, visit a local high-rope course, or even try paragliding – if you dare!
