Flying High & Laid-Back

Tiroler Zugspitz Arena has quite a few dramatic features on offer: After all, its namesake, the Zugspitze, is Germany’s highest peak. Located right at the border, Tiroler Zugspitz Arena provides easy access to the rugged summit – views over four different countries included.

But at heart, Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is a laid-back place. It’s a place where you and your family can come to rest and enjoy a long, sunny afternoon lakeside. Where you can have an adventure in natural surroundings that feel truly pristine. Or where you can take a single-track mountainbike trail with some of the most beautiful views of the Alps. Tiroler Zugspitz Arena has a surprise in store for every visitor – no matter what they’re looking for.

A British Family at Tiroler Zugspitz Arena

This summer, we conducted a little experiment: We sent Brit Nick, Dutchwoman Janneke and their two boys to Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, and asked them to bring back one thing – the perfect selfie. Over the course of their stay, they didn’t just take loads of perfect selfies – they also experienced an unforgettable summer holiday. Watch:

Ehrwalder Almbahn Cable Car (00:05) & Lake Ehrwalder Almsee (00:30)

To start off, Nick, Janneke and their boys took the Ehrwalder Almbahn Cable Car, with views that made the ride itself an experience. At the top, the Ehrwalder Alm area offers a host of possibilities to experience nature, especially through hiking, biking and mountaineering. Just a 10-minute walk from the cable car’s top station, you’ll find Lake Ehrwalder Almsee, a peaceful, man-made lake ideal for taking a breather.

Or Alternatively…

Want to get an early start? At the Almkopfbahn Bichlbach Cable Car, you can have your breakfast right inside the gondola, with breath-taking views of the Zugspitze. Breakfast starts at 9 am, and no worries: You can stay until you’ve finished your meal.

In Bichlbach, visit the historical guild’s church and museum where you’ll learn more about the history and challenges of local craftsmen.

“Moosle’s Magic Forest” in Lermoos (00:20)

Nick and Janneke took full advantage of the area’s many offerings for families: On special kids’ trails such as “Moosle’s Magic Forest”, the little ones can playfully explore nature, learn and discover new things or even take part in a scavenger hunt.

Or Alternatively…

There’s quite a few holiday experiences right on top of the Zugspitze. How about watching the sunrise in the midst of the Alps, for one? Or a traditional fondue night at the panoramic restaurant?

You can also visit a schnaps distillery in the area – or even take a class on how to make your own. At Ziegenpeter goat farm, you can try fresh goat’s milk, buy goat’s cheese and yogurt and delicious ice cream made from goat’s milk.

Lake Heiterwanger See in Heiterwang (00:55)

Taking a boat trip is always a highlight during a family holiday: Nick and Janneke’s boys especially enjoyed taking the helm themselves at Lake Heiterwanger See, and their parents fell in love with the serene mountainscape surrounding the lake.

Or Alternatively…

In need of some couple time? Enjoy a romantic dinner cruise on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Heiterwanger See and Lake Plansee (linked by a canal).

Active visitors can try their hand at stand-up paddle boarding here. Beginner’s courses, sunset tours or yoga sessions are available near the Fischer am See hotel.

Thirsty after a long day? Choose between three locally brewed beers at Austria’s highest brewery in Berwang.
