A New Perspective

The crystal-clear blue lake is what you’ll notice first. Then, you’ll look up at the majestic peaks, a backdrop so picturesque it might take your breath away for a moment. Close by, a glacier is waiting for you, offering a world of ice and snow in the middle of summer.

Visiting Zell am See-Kaprun in SalzburgerLand tends to be like that: You’ll peel back layer after layer, and still find yet another delightful surprise. Activities here run the gamut from yoga in a serene Alpine landscape to climbing a dam on a specially-designed via ferrata. You can take an exhilarating helicopter flight one day, then lazily bask in the sun by the lake for hours on end the next. And at the end of your stay, what you’ll notice is that you can’t wait to come back.

Two Brits in Zell am See-Kaprun: In Search of the Perfect Selfie

We sent Brits Hayley and Farah to Zell am See-Kaprun – and we gave them a challenge: Come back with the perfect selfie. If anything, they encountered too many great opportunities to fulfil their task. See for yourself:

Lake Zell (00:14) & Old Town (00:27)

Hayley and Farah showed their athletic side by trying out stand-up paddle boarding at Lake Zell, which turned out to be challenging at times, but always fun. They followed it up by exploring the town of Zell am See, including the magnificent Grand Hotel. The Magic Lake Show – an enchanting performance at the lake promenade featuring water, light and music installations – was the perfect end to a brilliant summer day.

Or Alternatively…

Lake Zell has a wide variety of activities on offer: From swimming and sailing to renting a boat and trying your hand at fishing.

If you’d like to learn more about Zell am See itself, join the town’s unique digital sightseeing tour. At 10 stations, locals will give you a personal look at the area via your smartphone.

Yoga on the Mountain (00:45)

The two friends continued their active adventure by taking a cable car up Schmittenhöhe mountain and taking part in a yoga session in the midst of unspoilt nature.

Or Alternatively…

Schmittenhöhe is a great hiking area, whether you’d like to stroll along the high-altitude promenade or spend an entire day enjoying the Pinzgau Walk. Special recommendation: Visit the reservoir pond at Plettsaukopf (accessible by cable car or a 1-hour walk from town) in the early morning hours to watch the sunrise.

Did you know that Austria’s best ice cream is served in Zell am See? Don’t miss your chance to taste it at Alpz Café, winners of the European Gelato Festival 2018.

Kitzsteinhorn: ICE Arena (00:57) & Wildlife Watching (1:10)

After enjoying the stunning view from the “Top of Salzburg” panorama platform on Kitzsteinhorn mountain, Hayley and Farah paid a visit to the ICE Arena on the glacier where they enjoyed some tobogganing at 3,000 metres above sea level. They then went on the Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour with a National Park ranger to see some local wildlife.

Or Alternatively…

There are hiking options galore on Kitzsteinhorn mountain, including routes with glacier views. A favourite is the Alexander Enzinger trail which leads from the glacier to the town of Kaprun.

Want a day to just relax? Visit Tauern Spa Kaprun with its world-class pools, saunas – and some of the most amazing views you’ll ever have from a hot tub.
