“The Alpe-Adria trail is perfectly suited to finding some inner balance and switching off from everyday life, just by walking.”

The Alpe-Adria Trail: from the Großglockner to the sea

The Austrian section of this three-country trail offers alpine climbs and summery lakes.
466 miles, from Austria's highest peak to the Adriatic Sea, the Alpe-Adria trail winds from Tirol to Italy. If, like most, you are not quite ready to attempt a thru-hike, doing even just one of the 43 stages, it is absolutely worthwhile. The region where Carinthia, Slovenia and the Italian province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia meet is extraordinarily beautiful, and there is no better way to explore it than on your feet.

From the Großglockner's permafrost, the trail passes turbulent rivers and lakes glistening in the sun, dramatic gorges and alpine meadows. The Alpe-Adria Trail combines the joys of nature, local food, and hiking in a way no other trail does - not least because the Carinthians are generous hosts. Don’t be intimidated by the length of the hike: most of the trail is at low altitude and there are few big climbs. Life is made even easier because you can arrange for your luggage to be forwarded to your destination each day, allowing you to only carry a day pack. Only your mental baggage won’t follow you on the trail.

“My favorite place to recharge my batteries is near to the Alexander hut. There's a bench where you can completely relax, which gives you beautiful views into the valley and over Lake Millstättersee.”
