I want to discover magical places

You're walking through a cool, shady forest of evergreens, sun spots dancing on the needle-covered ground. Up and up you go. And then, suddenly, the giant trees recede, giving way to an icy blue lake embedded between high peaks. It looks heavily filtered Instagram photo - and yet, it's real and you're in the middle of it all. Find out where other travellers experienced magical places in Austria:

Family Feel in Faak am See, Carinthia

"Difficult to name only one thing or place but if it must be one then, the Karawanken Lodge. The family and owners make you feel as though you’re visiting family."

      Sledging in Maria Waldrast, Tirol

We went sledging at Maria Waldrast. It is a beautiful, but not too difficult hike up and a fun way down on the sledge which you can rent there. It was a very nice fun day out with the family. -- Hannah, London

A Little Piece of Heaven in Hallstatt, Upper Austria

"As we turned a corner and first caught sight of the incredibly beautiful village of Hallstatt, we knew we’d found our little piece of heaven on earth. There is nowhere more beautiful in all of Europe. The high peaks of the Alps, clear blue waters of the lakes and the magical way in which both meet, bring the most breathtaking scenery imaginable."

Explore the City of Vienna by Bike or Boat

"We always love visiting Vienna and have good friends there. Our recommendation would be hiring bikes and cycling along the river to Bratislava! If you aren’t up for a cycle, go for the day by boat - both are lovely options."

Travelling from Vienna to Innsbruck with the ÖBB

"There are few, if any, places in the world which can beat my homeland, Scotland. Austria is the exception. The people are friendly, the food is great, the scenery out of this world and the public transport is simply envious. I cannot recommend highly enough ÖBB for getting from city to city or town to town. We have travelled with them from Germany to Tirol and back on several occasions and it is one of the highlights of the holiday."

    Pedal Boating in Kitzbühel, Tirol

"Two years ago during summer, I visited friends in Tirol, not far away from Kitzbühel. As it was really hot, we decided to go for a swim instead of hiking, so we went to lake Schwarzsee. We rented a pedal boat and jumped into the water! It was so nice and refreshing and the scenery with the high mountains in the background covered with snow was just breathtaking. We couldn’t get enough of the nature around us, swimming and having a wonderful time on the pedal boat at the same time."

    A Magical Day in Vorarlberg

"We loved the walk up the Hoher Freschen with our kids. We hiked up and had snacks at the Freschen Hütte right at the top. Even in June we walked over snow to reach the summit. The 360-degree view was amazing, as was the small chapel on the way down. We saw a farm on the way down and the farmer took our boys to show them newly born twin calves. It was the most magical experience for our sons aged 9 & 6. They have never forgotten it. Vorarlberg is so peaceful and scenically spectacular, we love it."

    Mondsee in Winter

A Winter Walk in Mondsee, Upper Austria

"It was winter and we were travelling to Salzburg by car. Because it had snowed a lot and the scenery looked very beautiful, we decided to stop at lake Mondsee. We enjoyed a walk in this winter wonderland during sunset, before continuing our ride to Salzburg."

    Hiking Bärenschütz Gorge, Styria

"As we started travelling without a particular plan, we got the recommendation of hiking up the Bärenschütz gorge from our host. We started the hike and were absolutely fascinated by the change of nature, as it was our first hike in a gorge. This trip was 3 ½ years ago and that’s always the first memory that pops up when I think back."

    Driving Through the Tirolean Alps

"My favourite part of Austria and in fact my whole road trip was driving through the Alps. I drove through a 6,000-metre tunnel and then a 5,000-metre tunnel and afterwards looked back on the whole road I had just driven and it was the most amazing sight."

A Story of Kindness, Consideration, and Love in the City of Salzburg

"My favourite travel experiences in Austria are many from my first visit to Salzburg in September 2000 - so good we returned in December. After that, we visited Vienna the following December and then back to Salzburg in '03, which is my most memorable holiday - not necessarily for the right reasons. After suffering a serious injury in an accident on an excursion, I found myself being operated on and having to spend a few days in the main A&E hospital in Salzburg.
It was the kindness, consideration and help given by everyone from the paramedics to all the hospital staff, along with the help given by the hotel to my uninjured companion in ensuring that they were well looked after. Then there was the start of the journey back to Edinburgh on 24th December 2003. The two paramedics taking us up to Munich were truly amazing and so helpful, even giving both of us small bags of Christmas biscuit type treats.
But what topped everything was the sunrise over Salzburg that morning. I have never ever seen one like it since, one of nature's true wonders. It reminded me of how my mum described a rainbow when I asked her when I was a wee boy: Rather than go into the scientific explanation she simply said "it's magical". That sunrise was the same.
So, thank you, Austria and your people.
I have been back a couple of times since, most recently to Vienna in January."

Ropeways and Austria's Best Cocktails in Zell am Ziller, Tirol

"Zell is in a lovely sunny wide part of the Ziller valley, where 3 different mountain ranges meet so lots of variety in walking - but our favourite is to head for the most eye-catching rock face above the village - the Gerlosstein. Take a cable car up to its foot and then its a fairly easy walk up to the 2,100 m high point for views that stretch from the Inn valley to the high ridge along the Italian border; or alternately be brave and take the direct route up the face, via the 380 m long fixed ropeway of the Klettersteig. Then back to the hospitality of Zell - our favourites are the Hofer's Wirtshäusl for its great food and service, and the Englhof for its official 'best cocktail bar in Austria' award. Looking forward to our next visit already."

A Brunch With a View in Innsbruck, Tirol

"We spent a weekend in Innsbruck, the capital of Tirol, and had a great brunch at Restaurant Seegrube on Nordkette. The amazing view over the city of Innsbruck combined with a delicious glass of prosecco (in combination with the rest of a great brunch selection) on the terrace was simply remarkable."

"Krapfen" at a Wine Tavern in Stainz, Styria

"Last summer, I went to Styria (to the area of Stainz) for a wedding. After the celebration we had some time to explore the surroundings of the wedding location so we walked up and down these wonderful hills, had great views over the vineyards of the region and then had local food in a very nice “Heurigen”. I can recommend the huge styrian Krapfen (pastry)!"

Cycling and Deep Gorges in Carinthia

"Kärnten seems to be off the tourist trail, which is a shame because the scenery, lakes and mountains are fantastic. The food is excellent, wherever you go. Activities are brilliant, being able to cycle beside the river Drau and its nature park. The Tscheppaschlucht is an amazing adventure into this deep gorge - before you come out to a beautiful 'fairy land' and enjoy a well-earned Bier."
