Trail riding in the Kalkalpen National Park

It’s the tranquillity which makes this area most attractive and which has a very special rhythm: the pace of four hoofs

On horseback you discover a landscape overflowing with coniferous forests, clear brooks - and find complete solitude. No less than 300 kilometres of riding trails criss-cross this national park, rough and scanty in higher regions, thickly forested with age-old spruces in lower areas. The Sengsengebirge, the Reichraminger Hintergebirge and Austria‘s largest unsettled forest area can be explored on horseback in company of trained horse guides which are always at hand with tips and advices, like how to brush the fur and fit the saddle before starting the excursion. In this way horse and rider will get used to with each other. A number of wild animals can be watched during the tour: roe deer, stags and – with some luck - also lynxes, living there without any danger by humans or cars. Along the well-marked horse trails refuges and horse ranches offer accommodation and many services like e.g. luggage transport. Western riding, too, can be practiced in the national park and those preferring the wilderness can stay overnight in the open air at campfires and and with everything else a cowboy needs. The “Pferdeland” in the National Park also offers horse riding lessons, therapeutic riding, tours in horse drawn carriages as well as horse breeding
