Stuben am Arlberg

Stuben am Arlberg is one of the oldest mountain “resorts” in the world. Founded in the 14th century as shelter for travelers and traders, it later became the birthplace of one of the greatest pioneers of modern skiing. Today it is a lovely ski village with direct access to the slopes.
Although tiny, Stuben plays an important role in the history of the Arlberg region. The village’s name pays tribute to its origins: “Stube” means living room in German. As such Stuben was established to be the last place where travelers could seek shelter in a heated “Stube” before heading up and over the Arlberg Pass – an imposing 5,883-ft (1,793m) natural barrier on the East-West trade route through the Alps.

Today, Stuben is known as the birthplace of the Arlberg’s most famous son, Hannes Schneider, who contributed greatly to the Arlberg’s reputation as the “Cradle of Alpine skiing”. The legendary skiing pioneer was the founder of the Arlberg’s first ski school in St. Anton and revolutionized ski instructing with his “Arlberg School.” To this day, the ski schools of the Arlberg region are among the best you can find.

With roughly 100 inhabitants, Stuben has retained its village character, radiating a sense of home and warmth. It has become a popular destination for families and for winter sports enthusiasts looking for something extra special. The local mountain – the Albona – offers one of the most stunning north-facing slopes in the Alps, guaranteeing snow into late spring. As within the entire Arlberg-region, countless groomed and deep powder routes invite snow enthusiasts to enjoy exhilarating downhill runs. With only four to five small streets in the village, setting off on your run right from your doorstep can be taken quite literally in Stuben! Come and experience Austrian alpine hospitality and skiing in its most authentic setting!
