“The Schwarzensee Lake is the best place to recharge your batteries, and is the heart of the Sölktäler Valley!”

Balm for the soul: the Sölktäler Naturepark

The Sölktäler Naturepark has been a place of retreat amongst Austrians for centuries. The valley’s remote lake and tree-covered mountain fringe look like out of a picture book.
It takes a moment to notice the peaceful quiet between the mountain chains. The only sounds are birdsong and the buzzing of bees. Sölktäler Naturepark in northern Styria is home to a spectacular, but solitary scenery. Archduke Johann of Austria stated he could never get enough of its splendors. 200 years later, visitors feel the same way - especially since the Naturepark has become more accessible.

As you walk the valley, look out for information panels along the themed trails. They help you  spot wild healing herbs and tell you more about the Naturepark’s history and wildlife. Whether you're planning a gentle stroll, or a demanding hike to one of the surrounding summits, the Sölktäler Naturepark is a perfect place to explore.

“The best thing is to come here and experience the power of the Sölktäler Valley for yourself. Simply observe the animals and listen to the rushing water. That brings peace and is a quite special way of slowing down.”

Once you've recharged your batteries and cleared your mind on the walking paths, you become more aware of your surroundings. The picturesque Schwarzensee lake, for one, is hard to miss. It has a fascinating plant and animal life, like a rare type of marsh in which rocks deposited millennia ago form underground corridors. In summer, the air which circulates and emerges from these tunnels is so cold that icicles can form.

If this has whetted your appetite for other natural phenomena, the "Natura Mirabilis" exhibition in the medieval setting of Großsölk castle is a hot tip. It takes you in the footsteps of the ancient muleteers, informs about endangered species, lets you experience an avalanche, or listen to the sound of a rippling mountain lake
