“The Wachau area has such a special ambience. You can look out over the Danube and the beautiful surrounding nature. That's really relaxing and lets you slow down.”

The delights of the Wachau World Heritage Trail

Encounter the local culture and culinary highlights while exploring the idylic Wachau Heritage Trail overlooking Danube river.
The 110 miles of the Wachau World Heritage Trail draw visitors back time and again. Hiking the Wachau Valley is never boring, thanks to the charming countryside, quaint Renaissance towns, and fortresses, ruins, and castles along the way. Explore the shady trails, flower-filled gardens and sun-drenched vineyards - all with a view of the Danube valley.

The Wachau Valley is one of the world's most scenic wine-growing regions, featuring stone terraces and steep vineyards. The World Heritage Trail introduces visitors to the highlights of the Danube valley. You’ll certainly work up an appetite after walking the trail, so stop at one of the countless roadside taverns are waiting to spoil the hungry hiker. Austrian hosts' zest for life and love of food is reflected in the home-made specialties and elegant wines offered to visitors. Fluffy apricot dumplings, prepared with Wachau apricots, of course, are a delicious specialty.

You don't have to climb up high to get a splendid view. A hike through the picturesque Wachau area reveals astounding panoramas.

One of the best views on the World Heritage Trail is from the Ferdinand Watch Tower, which overlooks the historic towns of Dürnstein and Krems. Get a fantastic view of the Danube loop between Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen from the Dürnstein Kanzel.

The ruins of Aggstein Castle, one of Austria's most famous fortresses, also provide an extensive view of the countryside, vineyards and Danube river. If you don't want to explore the idyllic region on your own, many local vintners, farmers, or forestry and wildlife experts are happy to guide you and show visitors their favorite spots.
